VMworld Europe 2015: The Day 0 Buzz

October 12th, 2015 No comments

VMworld Europe on Monday is Partner Day which is a separate track from the main VMworld dedicated to helping partners sell VMware products.

VMworld for most attendees kicks off in earnest tomorrow.

VMware Partner TV has a preview of what’s it about:

Run DMC!

BIG BIG News of the Day is that Dell is Buying EMC and the 80% is owns of VMware! It’s also worth reading a personal note from EMC CEO Joe Tucci, Dell and EMC: Why, and What It Means,  who will retire when the deal is done by year end and hand over the reigns to Michael Dell.

2015-10-12 11.12.31Really unexpected news, rumours started circulated last week and the many many people I spoke to today had no real advanced knowledge.

The industry is going through very turbulent times, HP is splitting at this very moment and Dell and EMC are coming together. Are these the last gasps of industry titans regrouping to battle for the scraps left behind after cloud ate their lunch? Worth a read: Dell. EMC. HP. Cisco. These Tech Giants Are the Walking Dead.

Rumours are circulating that Michael Dell will be coming to VMworld.

My laptop felt a little more at home today!

OK, back to VMworld!

VMworld Europe Preview: Differences + the DevOps Dilemmas

October 7th, 2015 No comments

I previewed VMworld San Francisco in my post: VMworld: Juggling and jousting, VMware’s battles for the future where I initially highlighted the recent people changes at VMware as well as the rough and tumble world VMware lives in while marketing and selling storage and networking. I also spent some time going though the changing face of application development which I’ll expand on in this post.

It’s different

VMworld Europe is the smaller sibling to the exuberant big ‘ol US VMworld that always seems to pave the way. 8000 attendees rather than 23000 certainly makes a difference although calling it more intimate would be taking it a bit far. All the big announcements and strategy crystal ball gazing is mostly done by VMworld US so Europe has historically been left with the hand me downs in terms of announcements. The focus for VMware is to re-use its US content in Europe 2 months later without it feeling stale and introduce just enough new information and provide the networking opportunities to make people spend the money to go.

VMworld: Juggling and jousting, VMware’s battles for the future

August 28th, 2015 No comments

VMware’s annual love fest that is VMworld kicks off in a few days time. VMworld isn’t just any vendor conference, it has become THE central meeting place to network and trade. Due to VMware technology being ubiquitous at the heart of the data center, nearly every vendor selling to the SMB, government or enterprise partners or interoperates with VMware meaning attendees can not only gorge themselves on VMware goodies but meet and catch-up with all the other vendors they also use, a very useful one-stop-shop conference.
VMware’s community has been the social gathering ground for much of the industry so getting up to date with technology is only half the fun, catching up with Twitter friends and meeting people from across the world is often the real reason people attend. Speaking to peers often teaches you more about the real world of IT compared to any amount of vendor marketing.

The world of IT doesn’t hang around, there’s constant change in how we do things and VMware is a prime target for change as everyone wants a piece of their pie. Nowadays there are options, VMware’s hypervisor isn’t the only viable one any more, Microsoft’s Hyper-V is good enough but without the bells and whistles and KVM, based on code you can change yourself is being rejigged and added to by many companies eager to fill in its shortcomings. Speaking of bells and whistles and shortcomings, these are the things that VMware’s hypervisor excel at which has made them rich but the bells and whisles are now no longer mandatory. New apps don’t need to rely on available infrastructure, you dont HAVE to have vMotion.

VMware is seen as rich pickings on so many fronts it must feel it is fighting battles in every corner it operates but that’s a sign of healthy competition which ultimately benefits customers. The fight is not just on the private infrastructure front but every type of cloud possible and also new ways of application development. There’s a lot going on in the IT world and much to infer by what is said or even not said at VMworld!

UKVMUG: The unofficial lowdown on everything announced at VMworld

November 18th, 2014 No comments

vmug-logoI have had the pleasure today of presenting at the 4th annual UK VMware User Group conference at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull near Birmingham.

I did a whirlwind tour of everything that was announced at VMworld and believe me, there was a huge amount. OK, so no major release which is the norm (but plenty of teasers) but enough other things going on in the VMware space to fill more than a UKVMUG! I know, I’ve done the research! Even though I was at VMworld US, so much was going on that I didn’t appreciate all the new shiny things being announced and once you start getting down to the nitty gritty of everything, you will be amazed at how much is going on.

I really didn’t have time to go through everything in detail so the presentation acts as an independently curated jumping off point for you to find out more information about the announcements that matter to you. You may not care particularly about hyper-converged or OpenStack so you can flick through the slides and then head off to continue your explorations.

Thanks for having me UKVMUG!

Here’s the presentation:
